Synthetic fibres for patio slabs: when can they replace reinforcement?

A concrete patio traditionally gets a steel reinforcement mesh, but structural synthetic fibres are an alternative. When do they replace the mesh?

A concrete patio is popular for its sleek, power-floated finish and low maintenance. Traditionally a steel reinforcement mesh is embedded in it, but synthetic fibres offer an increasingly used alternative. This article explains when fibres can fully replace the reinforcement mesh, and when a combination or traditional reinforcement is still the better choice.

Why patio slabs need reinforcement

A concrete patio, more than an indoor floor, is continuously exposed to changing conditions: rain, frost, sunlight and temperature swings between day and night or between seasons. This combination of factors makes patio slabs prone to cracking — both from shrinkage during curing and from settlement of the substrate and thermal movement afterwards. Reinforcement (traditional or fibre) limits this cracking and distributes the load from, for example, garden furniture, a hot tub or foot traffic across the floor.

Two types of synthetic fibres, two different roles

Micro synthetic fibres (often polypropylene, 10-20 mm long) are added in large quantities to limit plastic shrinkage cracks during the early curing phase. This is particularly useful for outdoor floors, which can dry out too quickly due to wind and sun, promoting shrinkage cracks. Micro fibres do not replace structural reinforcement, but improve the cohesion of the concrete mix in the fluid phase.

Macro or structural synthetic fibres are thicker and longer, and are developed specifically to improve the mechanical properties of concrete: toughness, flexural tensile strength, impact and fatigue resistance. Provided they are correctly dosed and backed by a structural calculation (usually in accordance with Eurocode 2), these fibres can fully or partly replace traditional steel reinforcement.

When can reinforcement be fully replaced by fibres?

For patio slabs with an even load (garden furniture, foot traffic, no heavy vehicles), structural synthetic fibres can fully replace the reinforcement mesh, provided:

• The dosage is matched to the expected load, usually via a calculation based on the original reinforcement plan.

• The slab thickness is sufficient for the application — a patio is usually based on around 15 cm, which would normally include a reinforcement mesh that is thus replaced by fibres.

• A fall (approximately 1.5 cm per metre) is applied where necessary to ensure water drainage, regardless of the reinforcement type chosen.

A concrete example: environmental gains from structural synthetic fibre

In prefab applications using structural synthetic fibre (such as Concrix, dosed at around 3 kg per m³ of concrete), it has been calculated that the Environmental Cost Indicator (MKI) drops from €17.51 with traditional reinforcement to just €1.13 with synthetic fibre reinforcement — an environmental cost saving of 93%. This type of structural synthetic fibre has tensile strengths of around 400 to 590 N/mm² and an E-modulus of around 4,900 to over 11,000 N/mm², and is supplied with a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and EPD certificate.

Why synthetic fibre is specifically suited to outdoor applications

• No corrosion risk under permanent weather exposure. A patio is exposed to rain all year round and, in winter, potentially to frost and de-icing salt from adjoining pavements. Unlike steel reinforcement mesh, synthetic fibres are entirely unaffected by this.

• Fibres work in all directions. Where a reinforcement mesh takes up force in two directions (length and width), fibres work in all directions throughout the volume — relevant for patios where forces (for example from point loads of furniture) do not always occur predictably in one direction.

• Less preparatory work. For small-scale patio projects (such as next to a garden shed), not having to move and position heavy reinforcement mesh is a practical advantage that shortens construction time.

When is traditional reinforcement (or a combination) still wiser?

• With heavy loads, such as a driveway that also serves as a patio and where cars, campervans or boats are placed — here a thicker slab (around 20 cm) with double reinforcement mesh is often used, and additional structural advice is recommended.

• When in doubt about the substrate, for example on peat soil, where piling may be needed — have this assessed by a structural engineer, regardless of the reinforcement type chosen.

• When combined with a frost edge, for example when a shed or other structure is to be placed on the slab — here additional advice on foundation reinforcement is needed.

In conclusion

For most concrete patio slabs with an even load, a structural synthetic fibre can fully replace the traditional reinforcement mesh, with the added benefits of no corrosion risk under weather exposure, less preparatory work and a considerably lower environmental impact. With heavy loads (such as a driveway) or a questionable substrate, consultation with a structural engineer remains necessary to determine whether additional or traditional reinforcement is still desirable.
