MKI and DuboCalc: how fibre reinforcement counts in your tender
More and more tenders from RWS, provinces and municipalities are awarded on MKI. Fibre reinforcement with a low CO₂ footprint makes the difference here.
In civil engineering and infrastructure tenders, the Milieukostenindicator (MKI, environmental cost indicator) is increasingly becoming an award criterion. Rijkswaterstaat, provinces and large municipalities run submissions through DuboCalc — and every kilogram of steel or CO₂ saved counts directly towards the notional discount.
Where are the gains?
Traditional steel reinforcement is one of the largest MKI items in a concrete structure. Replacing reinforcement mesh with structural macro fibres reduces not only steel consumption but also transport and labour hours. At the NDSM shipyard, this delivered a 98% CO₂ reduction on the reinforcement.
It also counts in asphalt: AsphaltX® extends the service life of the road surface by around 30%, which makes the maintenance cycle — and therefore the MKI over the service life — considerably more favourable.
EPDs and evidence
To count towards DuboCalc, you need verified environmental data: EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) per product.
